Brunello di Montalcino was the first Italian wine to receive DOCG status, granted in 1980, and it descends from a single grower's stubborn experiment. Clemente Santi isolated a dark, thick-skinned Sangiovese clone at Il Greppo in the 1860s and aged it far longer than convention allowed. His grandson Ferruccio Biondi-Santi refined the method. For decades the wine existed in tiny quantities; fewer than a dozen producers bottled it in 1960.
